We Are Studying About Local History!

For more than 25 years most of the 3rd Grade students in the Mount Vernon Public Schools have visited our Museum, usually in May, after studying about local history in school.

A few years ago our Museum worked with an enthusiastic group of Mount Vernon 3rd Grade teachers to develop an improved local history curriculum guide. As a result, most students now complete their "Knox County History Study Unit" just prior to their visit to our Museum. Some classes divide into smaller groups to do our "Hunt for History" activities as well.

It is a treat to see how much the 3rd Graders already know when they arrive - not just the names of major figures from the past, but many of the lesser known or even obscure persons as well. They really enjoy seeing and touching some of the things that they have so recently studied about in school.

We also have frequent visits from groups of Boy and Girl Scouts, 4-H'ers, special needs students, etc., as well as history classes from area high schools and the Mount Vernon Nazarene University.

Recently we have been working with accelerated students who will be placing QR (Quick Response) codes on historic sites in Mount Vernon for our high tech visitors to enjoy. You can CLICK HERE to learn more about their project.

As school finances improve, we hope to see more visits from students throughout Knox County and beyond. Give us a call (740-393-5247) if you'd like your group to tour our Museum.
